Study Expectations

On average, students spend 1 hour daily studying, five days a week. Some chapters may require more time due to their length and complexity. Students who complete one chapter per week will finish the CPMA training course in approximately two months.

365-Day Course Access

All students receive 365 days of access to the Medical Coding by Jen's CPMA course. This allows you to move at your own pace, revisit lessons, and review materials as you prepare for exams or transition into a medical coding career. *AAPC only gives 4 month access!

The CPMA exam features 100 multiple-choice questions over 4 hours. Your package includes two exam attempts.

Course curriculum overview

By the completion of the online CPMA Training Course, you will master the principles of medical auditing. You will be well-versed in defining and identifying fraud and abuse and be fluent in regulatory guidelines.

  • Explain the impact of the OIG Work Plan and Corporate Integrity Agreements (CIAs)

  • List the elements of compliance plans and identify potential compliance risk areas

  • Identify National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) and Medically Unlikely Edit (MUE) risk areas

  • Identify the purpose of recovery audit contractors and how to prepare for potential RAC audits · Explain the HIPAA privacy rule, including details on protected health information, minimum necessary, sharing of information, and enforcement

  • Identify medical record documentation standards and record retention standards

  • Identify common errors found in documentation for evaluation and management, anesthesia, surgery, radiology, pathology and laboratory, and medicine services

  • Explain the types of audits and the resources required for audits

  • Define steps of the audit process and identify statistical sampling types and factors

  • Provide practical application of auditing operative reports and evaluation and management services

FAQs

Does this course prepare you for a certification?

Yes, you will be prepared to sit for the Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA®) Certification Exam offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). You will receive an exam voucher after successful completion of the course.

When can I start the course?

This course is open enrollment, so you can register and start the course as soon as you are ready. Access to your course can take 24-48 business hours.

How long does it take to complete this course?

This course is self-paced and open enrollment, so you can start when you want and finish at your own pace. When you register, you'll receive twelve (12) months to complete the course.

What if I don't have enough time to complete my course within the time frame provided?

The time allotted for course completion has been calculated based on the number of course hours. However, if you are unable to complete the course, contact Jen at Medicalcodingbyjen@gmail.com to see what options you may have available to work out a suitable completion date. Please note that an extension fee may be charged.

What kind of support will I receive?

Our courses are designed to accommodate various learning preferences. Depending on the course structure, you may get different forms of support. Self-paced courses are designed to be user-friendly and independent, minimizing the need for external support. In courses with instructor, our direct platform support feature includes opportunities for questions, discussions, and remediation, with email and zoom lesson support available for select courses. Our goal is to provide you with the necessary support for success, whether it's through self-paced exploration, direct communication, or guidance from our instructor Jen.

What happens when I complete the course?

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a certificate of completion. In addition, you will receive an exam voucher for the Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA®) Certification Exam, offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) after successful completion of the course.

Do I have to have a medical coder certification before getting a CPMA?

No, I know many in the industry who only do auditing and do not have certifications as a medical coder.
